Quad cdp2 + 909 amp link
Posted Tuesday, January 29, 2008 at 9:26 AM

I was hoping to use a quadlink connection between my new CDP2 and 909 amp. However, the CDP2 output and the 909 input are both male sockets and the cable supplied is a male to female plug.
The 909 amp will not go into standby mode using phono connectors between the 2 units and I have to fumble around the back of the amp each time to switch it off. The speakers don't like that and give a loud click on switch-off.
The dealers advise me against a link using 2 female plugs for no better reason than "they don't trust them". Any views/technical opinions?

The Quadlink output from the CD-P will be at full level and will not be attenuated by the level control on the CD-P remote. It's only intended for feeding the 99 Pre which has its own master remote which controls pre-amp, CD player and tuner if fitted. When I caught the Quad bug about 18 months ago I started with just the CD-P and a 909 which were connected by the RCA's and everything was fine ,only trouble I wanted to have Analogue FM Radio again with my NAD tuner and so had to buy the 99 Pre to allow this.
Sound quality with the Pre very much the same as before I connected directly to the 909. Later (last year) I got a 99 Tuner from ebay but apart from the convenience of remote control tuning sounds much the same as the old NAD 4020A.
Don't worry about the 909 not going into standby when not using Quadlink - it doesn't anyway !, i.e it still takes 35W'ish even when the rest of the system is in standby ( this info is in the attached pdf).

Cheers,
Neil
