34 preamp losing one channel

I have lost output on the right channel of my quad 34. When I toggle the balance lever I get a crackly sound and the music returns intermittently. This led me to believe that the slider was dirty so I opened up the preamp, blew out the dust and cleaned the slider. However, the problem persists.

Has anyone experienced this and does it mean that I need a replacement for the balance slider? Any suggestions welcome.
